What is your opinion on the greatest hits compilation?
What do you think of Greatest Hits compilation? What happens when the artist does not approve the words of the songs and the label makes the whole development (ie, most compilations of Led Zeppelin or Radiohead's recent one)?
I think the greatest hits compilations, by definition, are compiled on the basis of what the songs were the most successful band, not necessarily the best material from the band. Ideally, I think band members should have an opinion on what songs are featured on the box systems - especially demo versions, live outtakes, etc., but I do not think it necessary to have input from a bunch of hits collections. The group has often let someone on the label to determine what songs will be released as singles. The label if it has done its part, has put money and effort in promoting the band to help get airplay and sell records. The label must be authorized to make extra money from the lyrics of songs based on their financial contribution IMO. If a group wants to control complete its catalog, its members must take care to read the fine print, I know that the shock would have been better. Or, alternatively, the group could put out their own music on his own label, label completely without intermediaries (such as Ani DiFranco has). So if you think these collections serve no musical value, I would say, yes, in some cases. The first album I ever bought with my money when I was 13 or 14 and distribution of newspapers, was the Rolling Stones "Hot Rocks". This is a great collection that encouraged me to go deeper, what I did. Some people do not want dig deeper, and that's fine too. Other big hits collection of singles understand that either were not in a first album, or have been dispersed among the first releases of incomplete examples it is Chuck Berry's "The Great Twenty-Eight," The Buzzcocks "Singles Going Steady" and most important collection of samples that I have the Rhino simple principles of The Kinks. Sometimes you do not have the time or inclination follow each album, the band released, but I want a good representation of the band as a Greatest Hits collection. They can be difficult to find, sometimes, but it-Creedence Clearwater Revival "Chronicle" is a good example - although I also ended up buying "Chronicle II.
Someday I will find all things CCR, but both are fine for now. A final point is there groups that have two songs on a great album with eight tracks of filler garbage, not every band is Led Zeppelin and Radiohead. Really everything that Madonna has released where you can just pick up "The Immaculate Collection"? * Head hangs in shame *
